CADA GRABADO ES UNA JOYA PRIMERA EDICION.   ALBUM PINTORESCO IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND EVOCATIVE 19TH CENTURY BOOK OF VIEWS OF CUBA Oblong quarto. Frontispiece, 30  lithographs views and one folding map of Havana. This splendid book of views evokes the island of Cuba as it flourished in the mid-19th century, a vibrant tropical haven with a splendid capital that served as a center of trade between Europe and the Americas. One of the oldest cities founded by Europeans in the western hemisphere, Havana and all of Cuba had become something of a destination for travelers as well as merchants when these views were made. Several of the scenes included in this album show Cuba's scenic ports teeming with the clipper ships and commercial vessels, some depicted masterfully in a moonlit setting. The views of Havana are particularly notable, showing the development of one of the oldest New World cities. In 1607, just over a century after Columbus made landfall in Cuba in 1492, Havana became the capital of the island and the front door to the vast Spanish colonial empire. The city was physically untouched by the wars of independence in the latter half of the 18th century, and thus remains the finest surviving Spanish complex in the Americas. Though the face of Cuba has changed considerably, its distinctive vibrancy is depicted vividly in these stunning 19th-century views, which illustrate not only on the island's ports and harbors,  scenes of everyday life and customs, including bull fighting and tobacco farming. The Album Pintoresco de la Isla de Cuba is a rare and beautiful record of 19th Pierre Toussaint Frédéric Mialhe was a French painter and engraver, known in Cuba as Federico Mialhe.  He was a student of Picot and exhibited his views of countries and cities at the Paris Salon from 1831 to 1861.  He lived in Havana from 1838 to 1854, initially arriving under contract to the printing house of the Real Sociedad Patriótica, to document the island.  He also served as a drawing professor at the art academy in Havana and associated with the Cuban intellectuals of the era.  Together, his collections Isla de Cuba, Isla de Cuba Pintoresca and Viaje Pintoresco por la Isla de Cuba remain as important documents of colonial Cuba, and were so popular in Europe that Viaje Pintoresco por la Isla de Cuba was reprinted there as Album Pintoresco de la Isla de Cuba.  The Museum of Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux has some of Miahle's landscape paintings in its collection.  The born-died dates for the artist shown above are from Bénézit, however, other references vary.    THE BOOKS  IS IN  VERY GOOD CONDITION, INSIDE IN GOOD CONDITION AND COMPLETE.  YOU ARE BIDDING ON A RARE, ORIGINAL PIECE OF CUBA'S HISTORY .
