New Arrivals All Auctions Rare Book Auctions Original Poster Auctions Title: Dune. Author: HERBERT, Frank. Philadelphia and New York: Chilton Books, 1965. First edition, Octavo, Hardcover, boards & cloth in dust jacket. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Reported as the first best-selling hardcover science fiction work of all time selling over 12 million copies, Frank Herbert's "Dune" has received numerous accolades including the prestigious Nebula Award for Best Novel (1965) and the Hugo Award (1966). The novel produced five sequels including "Dune Messiah," "Children of Dune," "God Emperor of Dune," Heretics of Dune" and "Chapterhouse Dune." The series continues with the writings of Herbert's son Brian and co-writer Kevin Anderson. Inspired by a US Department of Agriculture study in Florence, Oregon on poverty grasses and its ability to slow damaging sand dunes, Herbert discovered a new passion for ecology that led him to spend the next five years researching and writing what would become "Dune." The story was serialized in Analog magazine from 1963 to 1965 as two shorter works, "Dune World" and "The Prophet of Dune." The ecological messages Herbert saw in the early 1960's foreshadowed today's global warming crisis as we learn to grapple with society and technology's effect on our planet. "Dune" was adapted into film by director David Lynch in 1984 starring Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis, Kenneth McMillan, Sting, and Sean Young. A subsequent television miniseries was produced by the Sci Fi Channel in 2000 ("Frank Herbert's Dune"). Hot off the wires in March 2008, Peter Berg is set to direct a Paramount Picture's version of "Dune" in cooperation with Frank Herbert's son, Brian Herbert and Kevin Misher. The project is currently out to writers, 'with producers looking for a faithful adaptation of the original novel.' A fine copy, some very light, faint spots to top edge, in a fine first printing dust jacket ($5.95 price on front flap) with a touch of rubbing to upper front corner, head of spine panel, and some faint rubbing to folds. A very sharp and attractive copy of this classic novel, scarcely found in such superior condition.
