Description
A lovely book. It is incredible that such a talented artist as Kay Nielsen had such difficulties in life, having been at one time so impoverished as be running a small business - together with his wife - raising chickens, rather than working on the hauntingly beautiful watercolor paintings which have made Kay Nielsen a household name. It is a little known fact that at one time, this remarkably talented artist with such a unique vision - the visual style of his work is instantly recognised today amongst the imitators - had absolutely no paid artwork. Kay Nielsen's life story is very sad due to the difficulties he had, however his book illustrations continue to bring joy..... Below is some of his vision, inspired, original artwork - as a signed limited edition book. Enjoy.   The Czarina's Violet                            Moral             Prince! Your armies, horse and foot,                     Cannot kill a violet.           Call your engineers to root it,           Your artillery to shoot it;                     See, the flower defies you yet.           Drum, drum, fife and drum -           Pass and let the children come!   Book: In Powder & Crinoline Old Fairy Tales retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, superbly illustrated by Kay Nielsen. HODDER & STOUGHTON, LONDON, 1913. First Edition, limited to 500 copies only and signed by Kay Nielsen on limitation page. Publisher's original full green vellum, elaborately gilt-stamped cover and spine. Very large book, 32cm X 26cm X 5cm approximately, oversized folio. Twenty-six stunning tipped-in plates ( two more than the trade edition) on ornately decorated linen-like textured cardstock mounts, under decorated and captioned paper guards. Profusely illustrated with other drawings and vignettes. Top Edge Gilt, others uncut. THE ADVEDRTISEMENT FOR THE EXHIBITION of Kay Nielsen's Drawings and Watercolours is still present and folded into the book. Book Condition: An excellent copy. VG+. Externally very good+/nr Fine, very minor wear to extremities of binding. The spine and corners are in remarkable good condition as you can see for age. Later gold silk ties. Very slight fading and darkening of green color on back cover near edges. The front cover is in excellent condition, as is the spine, with the gilt remaining very bright. Top edge also very bright. Internally VG+, the endpapers and the first preliminary blank papers are foxed, there is a small bookplate at the top of the first preliminary blank ( the foxing on preliminaries and free end papers appears to be typical to this edition, as Hodder and Stoughton did not use boards and glue which was entirely acid free, so most often the endpapers are darkened, with transferring or spotting. Beyond the free endpapers and the last leaf, the contents are very bright and clean without anything at all of note. The binding is  tight and square. This book, both as the limited and the trade edition, is printed on a slightly creamy coloured paper, not white. This paper, both in the trade and in this limited edition always tends to darken slightly with time. The colour of the paper is correct for the book. This is one of the most beautiful books in our possession - and a lovely copy, gift, collection and investment worthy.   Good luck and enjoy your win!
