Description
A most beautiful and rare book, particularly as a signed limited edition - an essential work by the famous artist-illustrator Kay Nielsen, First Edition, 1914. Book: EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON: OLD TALES FROM THE NORTH. ILLUSTRATED BY KAY NIELSEN. HODDER AND STOUGHTON, no date but 1914. A lovely copy in modern facsimile cloth binding. Top Edge Gilt ( TEG), others uncut. Decorated end papers. Superbly and profusely illustrated by Kay Nielsen with 25 beautiful plates tipped-in on blue-and-gold edged cardstock mounts, each under a captioned tissue guard. The text is printed on high quality thick paper. Profusely decorated and illustrated also with numerous black and white designs, drawings and vignettes - almost every page has a drawing or a decoration. A marvellous work to own as this very special limited signed first edition. Book condition: Externally fine. The binding is relatively modern, and is thus in excellent condition without bumping, soiling or detracting marks. Internally good/very good. Free end papers and pastedowns browned and darkened as is typical. The limitation leaf and the last free blank with the printer's details ( Henry Stone and Son, Banbury) lightly spotted due to the proximity to the free end papers. Tissue over the frontis with lightly warped and with some light folds. Two other tissues lightly warped and with light folds. Uncut paper edges darkened and soiled. Text pages darkened and yellowed particularly at margins and corners. Some pages and plate mounts, in particular pg. 68, pg 78 ( ...page 78 is shown in photographs..), pg.112 and mount opposite with light brown staining at lower edge and/or at right edge. A few minor finger marks to corners of some pages and plate mounts. The black-and-white drawings have transferred to adjacent pages as is typical to this edition. The gutters somewhat dusty between some of the sewn gatherings. The top gilt edge also a little little dusty although still bright. All of the superb plates are in fine condtition without creases or tears. No bookplates or inscriptions. A very special book. The Fairy Tales include East Of The Sun and West Of The Moon, The Blue Belt, Prince Lindworm, The Lassie and Her Godmother, The Husband Who Was To Mind The House, The Lad Who Went To The North Wind, The Three Princesses Of Whiteland, Soria Moria Castle, The Giant Who Had No Heart In His Body, The Princess On The Glass Hill, The Widow's Son, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Princesses In The Blue Mountain, The Cat On The Dovrefell, One's Own Children Are Always Prettiest.
