Spengler's best known work. The Decline of the West (Der Untergang des Abendlandes) in which he puts forth a cyclical theory of the rise and decline of civilizations.      Spengler, Oswald. DER UNTERGANG DES ABENDLANDES. Umrisse Einer Morphologie der Weltgeschichte. Oskar Beck, München [Munich], 1920. 1st Edition. Two octavo Volumes. [Translated into English as THE DECLINE OF THE WEST]. Both volumes are uniformly bound in the publisher's cream coloured paper covered boards printed with black titles & graphics. An unusually fine set; publisher's promotional flyer laid into volume 1, neat name on verso of the ffe, original black endpapers clean & text block free of blemish. Volume 2 is the 1st edition. Volume 1 is an early printing but the first in this binding by Beck, who acquiring the copyright from Braunmuller, the Viennese academic house that published the 1st edition in 1918. "During the period after the First World War, is a politico-sociological phenomenon that has nothing to do with the intrinsic merits or demerits of this 'new outlook on history and the philosophy of destiny', as the author himself described the aim of his book. It was the major prophet, Toynbee, who took up the mantle that fell from the minor prophet, Spengler". - PMM, PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN # 410. A very popular title in its day, early printings of the separate volumes are not uncommon but collectible uniform sets are rarely found. An outstanding example in condition.
