Description
THE STUDIO:  AN ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE OF FINE AND APPLIED ART edited by Charles Holme.  Volumes 1-51 in the original publisher's binding with olive green cloth covers, gilt ornaments and titles, beveled edges, decorated endpapers (most), indices and lists of illustrations.  Volumes 1 & 2 are bound together.  Volume 16 also includes the Special Number titled "Modern Bookplates And Their Designers" 1898-99. These volumes are the most important and influential of the entire run of The Studio which continued its publication under various titles through the 1980's.  The volumes covered here (1893-1911) introduced the work of AUBREY BEARDSLEY, CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH and the Glasgow School, ETHEL REED, LOUIS RHEAD, LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY, C.F.A VOYSEY, H.M. BAILLIE-SCOTT, C.R. ASHBEE, CHRISTOPHER DRESSER, WALTER CRANE, STEINLEN, EUGENE GRASSET, JESSIE KING, JAMES MCNEILL WHISTLER, EDMUND DULAC and many others.  These years saw the peak of the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements in Britain, France, Austria and Germany and the Studio was at the forefront. Volumes 3, 6, 8 and 10 include ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS by JAMES MCNEILL WHISTLER (see photos).  They are untitled but have become known as "The Smith's Yard"," Savoy Pigeons," "The Long Gallery,  Louvre," and "La Robe Rouge."  These are sold at auction from between  $500-$1500 each.  See the auction records at artprice.com or artnet.com for sales records.  One is missing from Volume 3 titled "The Suede Gloves" (Les Gants Suede).  Also missing is an original litho. by William Nicholson.  There are many other original lithographs by lesser known artists including JOSEPH PENNELL. The standard reference work for Whistler Lithographs is the catalogue by Mervyn Levy, Jupiter, London, 1975.  Photocopies of his illustrated entries  on the lithographs offered here will be provided to the winning bidder.  They are: #83:  The Long Gallery Louvre, Lithograph, 1894, Signed with the butterfly (8 1/2 x 6 inches).  Published in The Studio with Studio stamp. #96:  La Robe Rouge, Lithograph 1894, signed with The Butterfly (7 1/8 x 6 inches).  Published in The Studio with Studio stamp. #126:  The Smith's Yard, Lithograph 1895, signed with The Butterfly (7 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches).  Published in The Studio with Studio stamp. #164:  Savoy Pigeons, Lithograph 1896.  signed with The Butterfly (7 3/4 x 5 3/8 inches).  A view of the Thames looking towards Westminster, and drawn from the balcony of The Savoy Hotel.  Published in The Studio with Studio stamp. My photographs show the publisher's cover design  for volumes 1 & 2 as well as the Art Nouveau cover design for  the rest of the run. They also show the Whistler lithographs which are signed with his usual butterfly signature and stamped with the embossed Studio logo (hard to see in these photos).   Jessie King's famous "Sir Lancelot" design is also photographed and several works by AUBREY BEARDSLEY whose design for the Studio Cover was rejected as too priapic.  He was an undiscovered artist until Joseph Pennell's piece brought him to the attention of the world. There are some condition issues: The extremely rare Volumes 1-11 are complete except for Volume 3 which is missing the Whistler litho. Volumes 13, 14,15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 27, 28, 30, 34, 45 are complete.  The remaining volumes are missing a few pages each.  Fortunately the missing pages are, for the most part and in my opinion, of lesser importance.  The major articles on the important figures are largely complete.    A list of missing or clipped pages follows: 12: The Nicholson woodcut 17:  156-162:  Article on Ernest Newton 21:  One page 22:  Three pages 24:  Two pages 25:  Two pages 26:  One page 29:  One page 31:  Five pages 32:  Eight pages 33:  One page 35:  Two pages 36:  One page 37:  One page 38:  Seven pages 39:  Two pages 40:  Three pages 41:  Two pages 42:  Three pages 43:  Two pages 44:  Two pages 46:  Two pages 47:  Three pages 48:  One page 49:  Two pages 50:  Two pages 51:  Three pages The covers are generally in good condition with some rubbing and some stains commensurate with use.  The spines vary in condition with fraying at the top and bottom of most.  Three  appear to have been chewed on the corner by a puppy. One has a cracked binding but is holding well.  There are about seven loose pages.  The tissue guards are mostly intact but some are toned, foxed or creased.  There is very little foxing otherwise.  Volume 2 has some minor waviness at the upper edge and volume 5 has some at the lower portion for the first 50 pages.  Some of the decorated endpapers have partial toning.  The covers of the first few volumes are browned as is usual.  Overall, this run is in good condition. I have offered this at a very reasonable opening bid which takes the condition issues into consideration.  I have researched other runs on the internet.  The closest I could find was one priced at 5500 pounds or about $8,250. This set consists of 71 volumes.  Only half are in the original publisher's binding and all of the original Whistler lithographs are missing.  I urge you to do your own research. Please contact me if you have any questions about this listing.  I would be happy to give you more information on particular volumes or articles.
